The hidden gem of Gem City, Ohio: Marcella Flowers
Marcella Flowers is a 25 year old independent artist building a fantasy world via music and vibrant storytelling. Using her own volatile and intense emotions as a guide, she explores the inner workings of her own mind as well as the world around her through her experimental indie pop sound.
Marcella grew up listening to a wide variety of musical genres and that is made evident by her own sound. The influence of Tumblr’s culture around 2014 shines through both her music as well as her fashion and visual aesthetic.
Accompanying every track is a handmade scented candle with a unique, original fragrance crafted to expand upon the sentiments expressed in each song. Other related creations, such as real pressed flower pinback buttons and jewelry, are also offered for select songs - all handmade by Marcella Flowers herself.

Her first single and the first track off of her upcoming debut album, “scorpion grass”, dives headfirst into the deep end with a poignant reflection on fears of abandonment and trust.
Followed by “garden girls”, the second track of the album, the genre switches from a melancholy indie folk sound, to dreampop and shoegaze. The lyrics recount the struggles of girlhood and friendships between women and girls through the use of flower-related idioms and double entendres.
Diving headfirst into the depths of the Greek underworld to understand the death of her childhood alongside the unexpected death of her father, the third track of the album “cosmos” sound draws inspiration from songs like “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap and “Because” by The Beatles to create a haunting ambiance of transcendent vocoded vocals.
Her fourth release takes inspiration from Homer's The Odyssey and uses the story of the lotus eaters to tell a compelling story of addiction and escapism through the sound of a 2000s pop song. The infectious bassline sets the stage for Marcella's finest vocal performance yet, and every little touch serves to bring the listener deeper and deeper into the hedonism and temptation in the world of the lotus eaters.
Her latest release “voodoo doll” was written when she was 17 after her first heartbreak. The song's themes are rooted in fears of abandonment that devolve into intense, emotional reactions when left unchecked. Using the metaphor of a voodoo doll that is typically depicted being stuck with needles, Marcella ties this into the themes of the Three of Swords tarot card which depicts a heart being pierced by three swords. The card represents heartbreak, but in a deeper sense, it represents the grief one must endure on the path towards independence and growth.
